Burundi is very overshadowed by its neighbouring countries: Rwanda, which is well-known for trekking with mountain gorillas, Tanzania, which is well-known for wildlife viewing and the yearly Wildebeest Migration, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is well-known for hiking one of the most famous active volcanoes in the world. Nevertheless, Burundi is still blessed with an abundance of natural resources, including Lake Tanganyika, Kibira Forest, and Rusizi National Park.

After your walk, you will head back to the lodge for rest and overnight.

Day 4: Visit Gishora Drum Sanctuary

Our guide will provide advice on the best time to depart to take in one of Africa’s best drum shows based on the timing of the event. The drums served as the cornerstone of the monarchy’s political authority in Burundi. Specialised families known as “Abatimbo” made and beat them on special occasions in significant locations. They announced national events such as the monarchs’ funerals, the sowing festival, and the royal coronation, and they provided the rhythm of the seasons.

Day 5: Bujumbura City Tour – Departure

Following breakfast in the morning, you will travel to Bujumbura for a city tour. Originally founded as a German military base in the early 20th century, Bujumbura is home to several notable sites, including the meeting place of Burton Speke and Livingston, the Bauhaus architectural style, monuments honouring heroes of democracy and independence, and everyday life.
